Early Literacy Programs

The Ipswich Public Library offers opportunities for children to hear stories from classic children’s literature and also from newer additions to the library’s children’s book collection.  The children are encouraged to practice skills such as listening, following directions and taking turns in a friendly, nurturing environment.  Story Time and Mother Goose on the Loose programs are held throughout the week, with programs designed for specific ages.

The early literacy programs at the library provide a venue for parents and caregivers to meet new people in their community.  These programs also provide a wonderful opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to spend time together.

Early Literacy options during the school year:

Do you have questions about the right program for the child or children in your care? Ask us. We would love to talk to you. Remember older or younger siblings are always welcome to attend. Email Laurie Collins at lcollins@ipswichlibrary.org, call the Children’s Room  at 978-412-8713 or ask us when you are here!

Registration is required for Mother Goose, Story Time and sometimes for other special programming.  You can sign up two weeks in advance for  Mother Goose or Story Time programs here: Early Literacy Registrations This link will bring you to the calendar to register for all of the dates/programs that you are interested in.

Mother Goose on the Loose meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

This program is most beneficial to caregivers with infants to age two. This 30-minute interactive early literacy program includes songs, stories, music and finger-plays for caregivers and babies to enjoy together.   Ipswich Children’s Room staff are trained in the presentation of this well-renowned, international early literacy program.    Older siblings are welcome.

Story Time meets on Thursdays at 10 a.m.

This 30-minute program is for caregivers with children ages 2 through Kindergarten. Older and younger siblings are welcome. It will be followed by open playtime.  Adults interact with the child in their care while listening to stories and participating in large motor skill activities, songs, flannel board activities and games.  Participants are invited to stay and play/chat afterwards.  This is a great program not only for parents, but for grandparents and their grandchildren or for caregivers who want to participate in Story Time with the children in their charge.

Watch for special Fun Fridays for the Little Ones programming with guest hosts presenting a variety of learning opportunities.  Registration will be required for these programs that will be offered once a month.

The first Monday of every month at 10 a.m. the library offers Music for the Little Ones with Eric Clemenzi.  This program involves singing and dancing for the young and the young at heart. Registration is required.  Check the calendar to be certain of the dates!
